Once again i am going to shout into the wind. As you all know, I am heatedly opinionated when it comes to Customer Service -- how to give it and the state of things in business today. Sympatico has always been a thorn in my side. For the last 24 hours I have been having constant stalls when browsing; regular and repeating. There are no groups talking about it, the stupid "stop light" icon on Sympatico says everything is ok and I am not going to call as that is horrendous. I decided to give their new service a call, a chat window to a call center. I got Praveen. I asked if, "there were any notices as to the stalls I was receiving." I understand all services have troubles but as long as they keep me apprised, I am happy. He asked for my account number and said he had to "check my records." Then he disconnected and ended the session. I could go back and yell (via ALL CAPS) but I know it's some guy in a Call Center in Cape Breton (lots of them there) or India or... Burlington (really top notch one there yesterday) and has no interest in my welfare. But WTF?!? Just disconnect without warning? Do nothing about the issue? I think it's just another one of Bell's internal stalling strategies as my experiences with them as a company in the past shows that they do not wish to solve customer service issues, just misdirect customers until they go away. Remember, in metering CS, it's the length of communication that matters, not the satisfaction of the customer. A short call matters more than an answer. I guess it's time to start checking out alternate DSL providers again --- I wonder if prices have become comparable yet without going to shady people like Ralphie.

Speaking of things, I finished collaging the new journal I bought to replace the retired one. I went to an artstore and bought this thinner model sketchbook (i prefer unlined journals) and some rubber cement to affix the collaged photos from my rejected prints pile. It is amazing how many times my crappy printer management softare has inverted landscape to portrait or vice versa. This completion also marks the joining of a new idea for PhoToast to be launched soon.

Today I retired my journal / notebook. This one has been with me since May 01. It is only 55% full. It's cover was created by collaging inkjet printouts of my favourite deziney style websites, those kinds of design based collectives that are not in vogue right now. It has journal entries, laundry lists, addresses, drawings, collages, complaints, unsent letters and postcard (stuffed inside), D&D notes, etc. I will now find another to take it's place but i think i might go for spiral bound.

OK, the story is about how Digg Just Might Bury Slashdot. For those of you who are not techheads, Slashdot (or /. if you like) is the ultimate in geek discussion sites. It is basically weblog styled with daily posts and a bid for comments. At times getting "slashdotted" meant getting thousands of people hitting your site at once. Digg combines the idea of "social bookmarking" (bookmarks stored publically instead of on your own computer) with the discussion blog. So you read a story and then "dig it" adding it to your own list of kewl linx.

Now it's not the tech that catches my attention but the person behind it. At the Wired story, there is Kevin Rose's little face attached. In my opinion Kevin Rose is the first true webgeek celebrity, combining cred with a personality made for the media. He's everywhere instead of fading once his on-air Screensavers / AOTS exposures went south. Most saw him leaving those shows because they lost the credibility and most would expect a geek who left TV to disappear. Nuh uh, he's out there and still making quite the name for him. If I was 14 he is who I would like to grow up to be.

So with the CBC on strike suffering a "labour disruption" does that mean even the website will run "best of" news? Nope. If you can change the locks on a door, how do you keep the web people out? p.s. weird that i had to strike out the word strike with a strike tag.

I am a little afraid to learn more about Second Life in much the same way I was afraid to try out a MMORPG. It's a virtual reality world not much different than our own. That in itself is not very intriguing but the challenge of the interaction is probably the intriguing nature.

P.S. As to the fears of MMORPGs, ask J what else she does for fun these days :)
