myanmar vs burma
With Burma in the news everywhere, Marmy commented about how the news stations were all calling it Burma when they should have been saying Myanmar. I speculated that it was in reaction to the nasty activity, with world news orgs choosing to use a familiar (albeit older) name instead of the one the military leaders changed it to. It seems it's not that simple.

This is why Spanish is such a better language, at least phonetically. I didn't even know there was a pronunciation debate. I read the name and pronounced it as I read it (with my Spanish-language underlying). It turns out that, according to the author of that article, I've been pronouncing it exactly as it should be.
Damn difficult English!

Haha, I just saw Gord Martineau on City News. He pronounced it "wrong", MEE-an-mar. haha
