anime terms
Speaking of just not being geek enough, while I watch Anime I am just not all that into it. In other words, while I love some of the story writing techniques, animation styles and fantastical action, I just don't have the energy to be otaku. For example, I didn't know the differences between Shōnen and Seinen, but it does say that the latter might be included in terms when I am searching for something new.
Currently? Still watching Darker Than Black now and again, lesser so Monster and I am trying to restart Gantz. I am always open for something new, as I would rather be astounded and amazed than just mildly entertained. Claymore looks interesting if but for the swords & monsters aspect. Gee, does turning 40 mean I have to have an entertainment mid-life crisis and stop watching stuph made for 16 year olds?

Anime. I simply never could get into it. I love all manner of more popular western animation a-la Futurama, South Park et all, but just can't stomach the style.
Which is odd because I often make efforts to stomach a lot, but no that.

Is it for 16 year olds? Most people I know who watch anime are in their mid- to late-20s. I'm 37 but then I'm just a casual viewer. DTB is the only series I'm currently into (and downloading ep. 21 as I write.)

In NA and Europe the viewing audience essentially ignores the demographic the animation studios have in mind when they create them. Well, at least according to the terms used to designate anime. If most anime is Shōnen, which is for teen boys, then I have no clue why it appeals to the higher age groups here. I do think that I might find more of the Seinen appealing, which is still 10 or 20 years below MY demographic but what they hey, I am more immature than most :)

maybe you need to start watching shoujo series hehehe
DTB's my current favourite also. can't seem to find any other interesting series right now : / mainly catching up on old stuff.
I think the latest series I enjoyed was Code Geass (though not my favourite character design)... and I'm only just now watching FMAlchemist O__o... but boy i love bones studio!
and I'm really proud that I actually finished Monster...hehe. mutherfrickin looong.

Hey V, long time no comment :D
i am always glad for you to provide recommendation and yeah, I have a tendency to go back and find stuff as well. it's like browsing the racks at a comic book store where there is so much that is a decent, if uninspiring, read but really, I would rather be impressed than just satisfied. i have to figure out a method to find the stuff that i will REALLY like.

what were the last series that really impressed you?
and do you mean impress visually or narratively or has to be both?
Posted by: v at September 13, 2007 01:56 AM
Hmmm, i guess it has to be both as a rule. but sometimes one can weight enough for me to forgive the other. The latest for both was Beck:Mongolian Chop Squad... a pretty tight story and i like the style. But for Ergo Proxy, I was really excited when it started hoping for a dark urban future city based story but they seemed to lose their way as soon as the journey started and by the end, I was only watching because of the style. style is a funny thing too as you can often see when the studio changes key animators. of course, if more could be like the styles & storytelling skills of GitS: Stand Alone Complex & Cowboy Bebop, I would be a happy happy guy.
It's weird. I am not sure exactly what I like but I am definately sure what I don't like. The comedic shounen stuff like Naruto & Ranma 1/2 and such bore the heck out of me. Fanservice doesn't interest me when it's done for it's own sake but i don't mind if it fits well into the story.
