I am playing Half Life 2: Episode 1 right now and I was marvelling at how many crates and barrels there are in the game.

That is standard for every FPS out there. Heck even CoH/CoV was a breeding ground for crates and barrels.
At least in HL you can throw around a good number of those containers.
