mary jane pinup statuette
I left customer feedback at Sideshow last night. I just got this reply:

"Thank you for your recent submission of your comments to our site. We appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts with us and have passed them on to the appropriate department for further review in consideration of our future products.

Our product is not produced to make a political or social statement but is fashioned after entertainment properties currently in the market place. We suggest that if you do find the Mary Jane product offensive that you refrain from viewing that web page.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance."
Marmy and I have argued this before. Being a man who has read these comics for years and being a man who rather likes boobies and being a man is pretty meh about most things leaves me not having any real input of value in the arguement. But this Mary Jane statue is freaking offensive. The designer may have wanted to play on the 50s pinup concept of a sexy housewife doing housewifey things, but I think they failed. The humour is there but it's more stripper / pornstar glamourization than campy pinup irony. Still, it will get the fanboy's rocks off so it will sell and do exactly what they like. I just wish there was a true way for people to have an impact on this sort of insensitivity.

Unless you want to hear my tirade about men being pigs, you will not mention this thing exists when you get home. You do not want to get me started on what exactly I think of that thing and the men who allowed it to be made.

You want to know the worst part? It is sold out at Sideshow. I'm gonna commission me one of those type statues but put a chemical in the paint that renders the owner sterile. That way, the neolithic cretins who actually bought it will never, ever breed.

so i guess that means i should buy one !!

Wow, a lot of hate for a silly statue. This is just another representation of a comic book character. To go off the deep end and assume all those that want this statue are male "pigs" that should be "rendered sterile" is very extreme.

Mary Jane is a super model in the comic books and this is why she appears to be so in the statue. IF the main problem is her doing her "man's" laundry than I think you have other issues that need to be dealt with.

I am a stay at home father and I do the laundry most of the times but my wife does it other days when I am not able to. The whole controversy about this statue is that it supposedly symbolizes that women are men's toys but you all are really reaching for that. Instead what is going on is you are giving free publicity to not only the makers of this statue but to the creator of the art as well, Adam Hughes. All these comments are really increasing sales and demand.

To be honest, the people who are offended by this are in the minority and are blowing it way out of proportion.

men are pigs, accept it. the hate generates from the issues just not being heard. imagine what would happen if a number of overtly sexualized gay-male stories and images started appearing in mainstream comics. skipping the demographic of introverted hetero often homophobic guys that make up the paying majority of comic buyers, some would like this material, both female readers and gay male readers. it might get their rocks off and that is the only reason for such a sexualized image.

yeah some of the reaction is pretty nasty and stupid and those are the same people who get all bent out of shape over any mention of women in a leering sexual manner. we men we leer and we likes da women. but as long as you understand and respect women, I am ok with sexyness.

i only read so far so i am amused that someone would have reacted to the laundry aspect of it. HAH!

This Statue rocks, thanks to the media coverage, there's gonna me a high demand for it, and the one that my wife ordered for me, I might just have to sale it to make a huge profit. Get a life and stop worrying about a damn statue, and go work in a homeless shelter for a while and see there's more to life than crying over a statue. Oh well, to each their own.

oh go bugger off. how about you make a huge profit off the stupid thing, as i don't doubt you will, and donate it to a homeless shelter?
