The difference with Olympians and the X-Men (Fantastic Four, etc.) is that the Marvel version of the suit is composed of "unstable molecules", not only does it provide some protection (although girls' costumes do seem to tear rather easily) but also reacts accordingly to whatever power the wearer might be employing, which comes in really handy, if say, you happen to spontaneously combust.

Imagine lining your boxing gloves with this material. Suddenly on impact you're hitting the other person's face with a sheet of hard material instead of padded leather.
Of course your hand would hella' hurt, but so would their face. :P

^ I was thinking the exact same thing! Wear padded gloves (like the ones Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter wear) but have the outer lining be made of these unstable molecules! WICKED!
