8:23 PM - Red light goes blinky-blink. Yay, someone loves me!

Female Voice: "This message is for David Petite. Please call my phone."

I really want to say something pithy, but it sort of speaks for itself.

10:30 PM - Innnn-teresting. Law & Order: CI is doing an episode that strikes me as being based on the whole Kaycee affair. Remember her? A bunnies & kittens website / blog telling the tale of a girl dying of a degenerative and painful disease who turned out to be nothing more than a creative writing assignment by some lonely woman? Of course, the episode is attaching more of a crime to the idea but the key elements of people being touched by her brave words, phone calls but no actual meetings and lots of internet contact are still there. Neat.

12:57 PM - As I wonder through this strange fruit's About page, as i do that sort of thing, I notice (i may have noticed it before but i quickly forgot) that he is from South Africa. Now relying on the statistics that most of the world's surfers are from North America, I wonder if he writes (ok ok i am admiting that i don't go by there all that often) from an enlightning point of view. As in, "hey there all you NAers, this is what life in SA is like."

I don't write about Montreal, or Canada, in any manner which would educate someone "out there" about living in this area. I have been thinking of re-organizing the way in which I write here so I may begin playing with the idea of, "you have never tripped over Montreal before so this is what it is like." And considering that even after 4 years I still feel like a tourist in neon green, perhaps I will enlighten myself as well.

BTW, I would have assumed GWM meant "guy with money."

5:03 PM - New desktop assumed from MISSION v.1.0. Why do people always use ALLCAPS in their <TITLE> and therefore causing me to leave it in their BlogThis entry? Why am i so lazy to do so?

Interesting note. Blogger's BlogThis doesn't seem to really want to publish anymore. So after I have posted something, I always have to wander in later and click post & publish again. Also of interest. To me, to me. When posting a desktop to your site, it would be nice if you included the RGB setting of the predominant colour of your graphic. That way my desktop items can blend nicely without me having to open your lovely piece of art in PS. Speaking of, I wonder if the new PS7 will work on my disturbed Motherboard?

1:09 PM - Considering the sizeable chunk of change I put out for knitting supplies that sits quietly under the desk, begging to be alchemically combined into something creative. And considering the wonderful kitty hat thanking the cooler weather of late, giving opportunities to cover my near shaven pate. Considering them. I give you dangerous chunky and links to lotsa other fine knitting sites.

11:25 AM - The bigwigs are afraid you are going to Napster their TV shows. After having spent most of yesterday evening DLing a full-CD game from a friendly FTP server (no names mentioned) and being frustrated at how long it took even with highband connection and roaring speeds, I doubt many people are hooked into this "show sharing".

And its weird how my brain can instantly contradict me. I have already participated in the sharing of CD copies of DivX TV shows - Farscape's second season only being shown in Canada now. And I have a few DivX movies tucked away. So, while I may not like the DLing someone obviously didn't mind. Ahhh, harkens back to the 2400baud days when you would hook up your external modem to someone's university FTP account and go to sleep while a pirated game would DL. Said game would probably fit on a floppy today.

10:53 AM - I have determined, after a handful of postcards and whatnot, I am a cranky postcardXer. When I envisioned receiving postcards from around the world (mostly US of course), I saw slices of life, artcards, pithy blog-like commentaries and observations, etc. I hoped for mixCDs & tapes with everyone's non-britney music tastes. But I have, for the most part, got "hi this is from postcardx" and a return address. I have also received chain letters & cast-offs from someone's purchased CD collection or Columbia House not-wants. I will continue to send out non-return-addressed postcards with my own slices of life. I will not compell people to write to me in order to fill my mail box. I got that out of my system in my penner days (slams & fbs and bunny stamped letters oh my !!). I will make note on my postcardx profile of neat things i get and ignore the dross.

11:57 AM - So we saw "The Scorpian King" (J: "You owe me big time") yesterday and it was less and more as I expected. It was attempting to be the rolicking adventure as the films it prequelled but for the most part the humour fell flat. As pulp fantasy, it also failed for the story was cliche and the action (and sexism) stunted by its PG rating. But it was pretty much what I expected and I did enjoy the costuming and the sets.

But what did excite me to no ends was the trailer for "Reign of Fire". This is an ambitious SpecFic with quite the far-fetched and intriguing premise: Dragons are back and in less than 25 years they have turned the planet into an apocalyptic nightmare. Set at the source of the Dragons, London, an american soldier (buff & scary looking Matthew McConaughey) and a group of militaristic dragon-slayers are trying to change the course of mankind's downfall. They have taken the source of many classic fantasy epics (dragon slaying) and combined it with the classic elements of a post-apocalyptic action movie. Saying this out loud actually makes me cringe somewhat but the trailers actually have me more interested in it, than either "Spiderman" or Stars Wars: II". I hope it comes off well.

3:54 PM - J & I have been dumped in the cold by our "family doctor" or GP. You find one near you, having asked around for recommendations. You go to him for 2+ years and everything seems fine. Then he gets up and moves down a few doors to a CLSC, which happens to be in NDG. Thus we, as Westmounters, do not have access to him. His phone message tells you to find yourself a new doctor and not to leave any messages. I am pissed. First, what kind of doctor just abandons his patients without even informing them of the change nor assisting in the transition to a new GP ?? Secondly, I have been blissfully unaware of the fact that public clinics were regional. Huh ?!? That seems somewhat counterproductive to public health. That's ignoring the fact that there is supposed to be an amalgamation of the cities of the Isle of Montreal. Grrrrrrr...

12:51 PM - During my first viewing of Episode 1, as the music started and the title started to slide back, I leaned to J and whispered, "OK, that's enough. I am satisfied." Yup that was all it took, acknowledgement of that 12 year old boy inside me (he's actually wandering around the apartment alot these days) who saw Star Wars during its intital release. The music left an indelible imprint on me. I cried the day I dropped & shattered record two of my Star Wars score. I cringed at the girliness of the Princess Theme but grinned at the power behind the Empire Theme. While I may not being "lining up" I am still a Star Wars geek.

You one too? Ok, then read Time magazine. (fr moooooo)

Canadian: the bodies of four Canadians killed by American "friendly fire" (otherwise known as klusterfucked) are returning home in the morning. American: a washed up hollywood "star" is finally arrested for the murder of his wife and we get to watch another helicopter follow a white car going somewhere.

12:38 PM - Reading through The Mousetrap, a blog by a 71 year old senior, it reminds me that old folks are people too. How trite? Well, I honestly do not have that much experience with Old Folks as people. In my adult years I have had Cranky Grandmother, Kindly Doting Grandmother and Silent Grandfather. But they have never been people. No real conversations, nothing beyond grandson talk & bingo. I think it would be interesting to read my (doting) grandmother's blog, to hear her perspective on life in Sydney right now after the fall of the Steel Plant and the end of the mining way of life.

6:30 PM - Work on .BIZ site? Frick that, I am going outside.

OK, that was enough 30+ humidity. Off to the AMC for Frailty. Ummmm, why is the heat on in the theatre? Give me my money back please.

Wander bookstores seeking those few with active AC. Note to strangers in front of us: no there are not hundreds of active coal mines in Cape Breton; the one you heard was closing was the last one, the end of a way of life.

Now its time for a nice light meal, my bell peppers & brie sandwichs on fluffy white bread. And as a heat quencher, my own pseudo-shandy of Amber ale and sparkling apple juice.

2:26 PM - Ancanar.com, the site for a digitally produced independant film done with Tolkien fans in mind, being of swords and elves and epic tales. It seems quite lush from the production values of its site so I suppose it will be a matter of direction and acting to sink or sail it.

This has me thinking more on digital film and its future. Once I solidify some of those thoughts, you might see a new site come out of it.

7:33 PM - I just remembered. I had a weird naughty dream about Gwen Stefani last night. Weird, because I was my 14 year old self and it was in my bunkbeds. Must have been last night's strange barragement of blondes and boobs. Canadian talk show had big blonde boobs (some wrestler chick), american talk shows had itty bitty blonde boobs (cameron diaz and shakira) and Much had the itty bittiest with a No Doubt profile. Speaking of, have you seen the latest online trailer for Spiderman, otherwise known as nipples in the rain ??

3:34 PM - I had to remove SinFest from my regular comic viewing as it started introducing annoyin popups. In general, I have become oblivious to the average popup, but this new breed of popup that requires you to hunt for a Close button (disabling IE standard windows) or cannot be closed at all without a click-through, well they really piss me off and will eliminate the torturer from my surfing.

2:11 PM - Heh. Library Cats in Canada. As Cam also mentioned, bookstores are also common homes for cats. The Wee Book Inn had a cat so popular he ended up in their logo. I remember that place in Edmonton, in the main downtown (street name escapes me). Every week night walking back from A-Channel just before midnight, we would make a stop in and just browse through the shelves and give the old arthritic cat a scratch.

1:11 PM - Toothy Update. I am still rising from the stupor of 1.5 hours in the chair but I am happy to say that the splitting of the tooth may have been the best thing to happen. A full corner of a molar fell off, revealing the previously undisclosed crack location. Simply? The crack that could have, when it was hiding its location, been leading to nerve damage and therefore a very expensive and very painful root canal has been eliminated. A massive filling has been done, covering and protecting the sensitive layer from air, temperature and chocolate. I am now going to go sleep and wake up later this afternoon, a less-drooling man.

Of course, like all people involved in business who do wrong, they claim they haven't done anything wrong and tell you to sod off. I cannot wait to hear how this one turns out. In the least, a certain designer is probably going to be canned.

11:05 PM - The Crack of Doom. Mordor has nothing on my jawline. Remember that cracked tooth from a month ago? I had an estimate coming from J's insurance company to see if I could afford this "getting the teeth fixed" sucker. Estimate came in; either dentist is truly charging far too much or insurance company is basing this on 1978 rates. But alas I can no longer avoid this by chewing on the left side of my mouth. I bit cheeze tonight; you know, soft mallable cheeze? And *CRACK* my molar splits in two and falls into my palm. I have no choice. Just breathing the wrong way causes funnels of pain throughout the entire right side of my mouth, let alone actually eating or drinking. We are now going to discover how friendly the overdraft is on credit cards.

4:46 AM - Last night I began to get confused while reading the end of a book. Pages stopped making sense, so I assumed i was too tired and placed the book aside. This afternoon I grabbed it, coffee in hand, and began to finish it. That was when I noticed the source of my confusion. Eight contiguous pages had been tossed into the air, gathered together and placed into the book. After flipping back and forth through the 8 pages I was able to finish the book with only slightly less confusion. I am not fond of books that sacrifice story in order to impress you with their ability to combine Xian metaphor with mentions of Rick & Ilsa from Casablanca. Ahh the joys of Advance Uncorrected Proofs.

4:19 AM - As is expected, the MeFi conversation on the closing of Oprah's BookClub is quite amusing yet smacks of the reason for most of the large popular discussion areas become tedious after a while. The amount of "yer an idiot, shaddup" directed at others is such a waste of my tired eyes.

That being said, do I hate the Oprah Club? Nah, I cannot. As many have said, if you are reading then its better than not reading. Or so I have been telling myself for decades while I sup down a plethora of pulp and SpecFic. I read fiction, usually bad fiction. Horror, SciFi, Licensed Properties, Fantasy, Mystery, etc. Probably the only trash I do avoid is romance. Does it teach? Not often. Does it enlighten? Hah. Ever since my eye surgery, its hard enough to focus on a printed page for more than a half hour (left eye is like viewing through leaded glass) so I tend to choose that which I can digest quickly. I read because I enjoy it, not to satisfy some intellectual desire.

And THAT being said, why do I disagree with myself? Ignoring the rest of the cacophany of demons in my head, some of them say that you should ALWAYS attempt to be enlightened and taught when you read. Critical thinking. We need it. It assists us in making decisions when they really matter. And I am not just talking non-fiction or classic literature. Contemporary fiction, in its most literary state is that which should provide critical thinking. I believe we should attempt to rise above pulp fiction and learn something from the words we digest, just as I believe Chris Farley was best avoided and Amelie is such a better choice of comedic film. (topic broached by a strange froot)

So which demons will I listen to tomorrow?
